Nicaragua Trip Update

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!—Psalm 97:12

I wanted to share a brief overview of my time in Nicaragua. Thanks for all your prayers and support enabling me to serve as your hands and feet to those in need.

My first experience with a Disaster Relief team was an interesting one. Those God brought together to form our team meshed very well together, however, more amazing was the team God assembled on the ground in Nicaragua. Several young men and the pastor from a church near the villages we would be working in, contacts of Robbie Lathrop MTW missionary to Nicaragua, were waiting for us in Puerta Cabezas. After arriving in Managua we flew in a little puddle jumper twin prop plane to the north east coastal city of Puerta Cabezas. From there it was an hour drive to the first village we were scheduled to visit.

Expecting to be helping Spanish speaking people it was a big surprise to find out that most spoke Meskito. Not quite sure how things were going to work out we had some concerns, but the Lord had it all under control. A university student, George, at the last minute replaced a local church member who couldn’t make it to the village. George not only spoke Spanish and Meskito but very good English! With George’s help and a few others we were able to communicate just fine.

Not sure how God was going to use me I found my niche, working in the pharmacy filling prescriptions. The village leaders along with their pastor made preparations for us to stay in the church building, one of only a few existing concrete structures, and set up our clinic there also. The sleeping accommodations weren’t the best especially for the ladies. At first it seemed the balcony would be an ideal location for them not realizing the rat, bats and mice thought the same. We actually had bats in our belfry there in Tuara.

After spending two days in Tuara and seeing some 160 patients it was time to head over to Santa Marta. On our third day the medical team worked along side the Nicaragua doctor assigned to that village. Between our doctors, nurses and the local doctor we were able to see over 80 patients plus reach another 76 with medication for worms.

All of us felt God had orchestrated this trip, from the U.S. side to those in Nicaragua who were so vital to the effectiveness of this effort. Not seeing any severely ill patients and having a strong thriving church there in Tuara we believe God’s plan for us being there was to be an encouragement to our brothers and sisters in Christ. After the initial strike of Felix they received tarps and some food but not much else. Us being there we believe was God letting His church there in Tuara know that He had not forgotten them! MTW has plans of sending future teams to assist in rebuilding projects as most of the houses, made out of wood, were destroyed. Here is a link to pictures from the trip Scott & Kathy Craig.

We will be in Atlanta this Friday for MTW’s Global Missions Conference. We will only be there for the first half though as we have a couple churches to visit in Florida so that’s where we will be over Thanksgiving. If you have any possible church contacts, those looking to support the ongoing work of building the Kingdom, please don’t hesitate to contact us as we are still seeking the 20% that God has prepared to join our support team. We are willing and able to share with those wanting to know more about the ministries of the MTW Northern Mexico Church Planting Team headquartered in Monterrey.

In Him,

Scott Craig
