Pastoral Care in Crisis Conference

We had the opportunity to be in three churches on the weekend. On Friday night, the 4th of November, I preached at an Assemblies of God church. I was well received and the doctrines of Grace were clearly presented. The pastor was very enthusiastic about FLET University and was planning with Cesar Mermejo, our Flet representative (from Venezuela), on getting his leadership trained through Flet.

On Saturday morning we arrived to approximately 70 people who were ready for the Crisis conference. This was at the Disciples of Christ church, and it lasted from 9 AM until 12:30. I had worked most of the night before to remove slides from the ppt. so that it wouldn't be so long. Yet the projector didnīt turn on at the church due to low power voltage. So Robyn flipped the slides for me through their system. It was a challenge to speak about death and dying, depression, suicide, how to handle crisis, and "where is God in our suffering" in that short a period of time - yet the audience was familiar with the topics first hand and wanted any hope that I could give them. What a joy it was to be able to deliver with confidence the promises of Christ and to find meaning even when we are hurting and canīt see beyond our loss. Cesar is confident that we will have a FLET group formed in that church as well.

On Sunday Robyn and I took a taxi to a large Presbyterian church that we knew about because they receive groups of young people from Covenant College - both our girls had been with them at times past. We enjoyed the church service and we spoke to pastor Rivera about Flet, he felt this has exactly what they needed for their leadership training.

So we came back from Puerto Rico encouraged with the need and prospect for various FLET centers held in these churches and administered by Cesar. Please pray that FLET will have a strong presence there.

Pictures of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

Robyn and I enjoyed a day walking around Old San Juan, amazed at the size of the walls and El Morro - the fort the Spaniards built to protect the city against invaders in the 15th and 16th century. We loved the narrow cobble stone streets, the architecture, and the beautiful balconies. There were some similarities to Havana, Cuba, though in San Juan everything is kept up and recently painted - the economical contrast is obvious. We didnīt get to see much of the other parts of the island in the short time we were there, yet we can say that it is an "enchanting island".
