Impossible Grace
Lima, Peru. In a culture of distrust, fear and isolation prevail. But such an environment is also ripe for transformation through the Gospel. "Many folks in Lima have never heard the Gospel," says Mark Berry (M.Div.'99). "When you present Christ and His work on the cross, people are amazed. When you share the gift of eternal life, the gift of righteousness in Christ, it hits home."
Mark and Lori Berry have been serving in Lima for three years. Nearly one-third ot Peru's population, 8.5 million people, lives in or around Lima, most in great poverty. How does the Gospel reach people against such incredible odds?

"You have a sense of doing something that is completely impossible, and that's where you really begin to pray," says Mark. Such impossible grace only comes through the Holy Spirit. Lori affirms such truth, adding, "You see people change and say, That can only be God working."

In addition to sharing; the Gospel with neighbors and teaching Evangelism Explosion to local pastors the Berrys have a desire to see more ministers trained. Mark remembers, "The most impacting aspects of our time at Covenant Theological Seminary include the winsomeness, the example, and the approach of the professors. They didn't just teach information; they taught us a real love for people." Lori adds, "The professors were interested in and concerned about us, who we were and who God was making us to be. Covenant Seminary was never just a classroom."

As the Berrys serve to bring the Gospel to Lima, Mark reflects, "It isn't enough to give people the right ideas. You also have to be concerned for their character." Such is the concern of Christ lived out in the Berrys, offering transformation, new life, and hope for eternity through a grace that is not just amazing but, humanly speaking, impossible.

Mark and Lori Berry serve in Lima, Peru along with their four children, Emmett, Anna, Taylor, and Abigail.
